Parish Social Night in aid of The Delhi Brotherhood project
Over the last couple of years we have become involved with the Missionary Society USPG (United Society for the Propagation of the Gospel). In particular, we have linked in with a project in Delhi, India, run by the Delhi Brotherhood, which was set up over a hundred years ago as an extension link from Cambridge University.
The Delhi Brotherhood Project does immensely good work. Many hundreds of young people travel to the city for work. These are as young as 5 or 6 years old. As they reach the main train station in Delhi representatives of the thriving sex industry offer them accommodation and promise them work. Many end up on drugs, on the street as child prostitutes or worse.
The Delhi Brotherhood endeavour to break that cycle by offering these children accommodation in their shelters across the city. Alongside that they educate them in practical ways. The girls are taught sewing and dressmaking. The boys are taught basic computer skills and car mechanics. These are invaluable skills in the bustling city of Delhi.
Our support of this project over the last two years has made a huge difference to their work. A small group of parishioners has worked steadily on the Indian Project over that time. It is made up of Ted Jones, Elaine Flood, Declan Barry and myself.
We are having a Parish Social Evening in aid of the Project on Friday 29th February in the Parish Centre.
USPG will do the catering and it will be great fun. It will have very much an Indian flavour with Indian music, food, and smells. Tickets are €25 and are available from Elaine, Heather and Mandy. Please come along and bring friends. Further details are available from the ticket sellers. (There will be a non-spicy dish available on the night for the slightly less-adventurous.)
Please come along, you will have great fun and it is for a great cause.
